Doing better
is our
Nature.

For over 30 years we have been producing high-quality oil products and feedstock for the chemical industry at our refinery. The path from crude oil to finished products involves a long, multi-stage process.

First we fragment the crude oil into its different components, i.e. we distil it and remove impurities like sulphur.

Then, we upgrade it into base products for fuels, heating oils, and feedstock for the chemical industry. Finally we blend the products as per customer requirements and add additives such as bioethanol.

Our
Products

We process crude oil into various oil products that have become essential parts of our lives. Our products ensure mobility, heating, and much more.

Up to 500 trucks collect gasoline, diesel, and heating oil from us every day and use it to supply Hamburg and northern Germany with high-quality fuels and heating oil.

Our annual production of gasoline is sufficient to fill 31 million mid-range cars.

Our heating oil production heats the homes of 450,000 households in Hamburg for a year.

We are responsible for around one-fifth of German cyclohexane production. Cyclohexane is a sought-after feedstock for the chemical industry. It is processed into nylon, for example.

Our Commitment
to Quality

We process crude oil from different sources and with different composition. We blend the different oils exactly to ensure the consistency of our finished products. Our goal is to continuously produce to DIN standard.

We use our own laboratory to inspect and control the entire production process – from delivery of the crude oil to supply of our product. Regular product samples and evaluations assure our high quality requirements.

Our ambition:
To exceed the DIN standard.

Our
Facilities

Our refinery is divided into two major sections: the crude oil distillation facility and the catalytic cracking plant. These two refinery sections, in turn, contain a wide variety of individual units, such as the desalinator or isomerisation unit. The many towers, reactors, and tanks are interconnected by a kilometre long pipeline system.

Together they result in an impressive and highly complex "oil factory" producing 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

We work in shifts because our refinery produces around the clock. There are at least 25 employees present on each night shift to run the facilities safely and efficiently.

A control room with the latest technology is also used to control and monitor the refinery facilities.

Infrastructure

We require many auxiliary facilities to operate the refinery:

  • For instance we have our own harbour that is used to deliver imported products and dispatch finished products.
  • Our proprietary train station is used to supply recipients via rail cars.
  • But the majority of finished products leave our refinery by trucks that are filled at our truck filling station.
  • We also operate a large tank farm (around 70 tanks in a wide variety of sizes), since intermediate and above all finished products have to be stored.

We also operate exhaust gas cleaning systems, a waste water treatment plant, a company fire service, the flare system and many other facilities that ensure safety and environmental protection.

The pipeline that supplies us with crude oil from Wilhelmshaven is operated by our subsidiary NDO. It is 140 kilometres long and carries around five million tons of crude oil to the refinery each year – more safely and reliably than via tankers on the Elbe.
