Historically valuable: Air raid shelter near HOLBORN in the spotlight of Hamburg's Unterwelten e.V.
A commemorative plaque on the fence of HOLBORN Europa Raffinerie provides information about the history and use of the air-raid shelter at the entrance to our premises: thanks to the experts from the Hamburger Unterwelten e.V.
A year and a half ago, the Hamburger Unterwelten e.V., which is dedicated to researching and documenting underground and, in some cases, above-ground structures, contacted us for the first time. The subject was the Salzgitter-type crew bunker, which has always been a familiar sight for HOLBORNER at the entrance to the refinery site. After an initial inspection and many photos, the Unterwelten team designed an elaborate commemorative plaque brimming with information about the construction, history and use of this very special type of air-raid shelter – not least against the backdrop of Allied air raids on the Harburg oil refineries during the Second World War. On Monday, 7 October 2024, the plaque was officially handed over by the association to the HOLBORN Europa refinery – it now hangs prominently on the fence in front of the building. The "Hamburger Abendblatt" newspaper took advantage of this to visit the site and published an exciting article that provides a rare insight into the "Bunker Süd".
